Originally the site of a Franciscan convent in the 13th century, the villa was transformed at the end of the 18th century by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini into a refined retreat for leisure and literary gatherings. Over the centuries, Villa del Balbianello was home to prominent families, including the Porro Lambertenghi and Arconati Visconti, later passing to philanthropist Marie Peyrat and then to American general Butler Ames. In 1974, it was purchased by entrepreneur, collector, and explorer Guido Monzino, who upon his death donated it to the FAI (Italian National Trust) in 1988.
Monzino transformed the villa into a unique sanctuary, preserving memories of a life of adventure that included being the first Italian to reach the summit of Everest. The interiors reflect this extraordinary life, featuring 18th-century French furnishings, collections of non-European art, silverware, ceramics, glass paintings, and Beauvais tapestries. The attic houses the Expedition Museum, displaying flags, photographs, ethnographic artifacts, Inuit ivory collections—the largest outside Greenland—and the sled used during the 1971 North Pole expedition.
Since 1988, the FAI has maintained Villa del Balbianello, preserving its historic spirit. The gardens are equally remarkable, with daring topiary, romantic vistas, tree-lined avenues adorned with statues, panoramic terraces, and seasonal floral displays.
The Panoramic Loggia forms the dramatic heart of the villa, hosting the Music Room and the Library, which preserves Monzino’s alpinism and geography collection.
